Mission
Brussels Arts Platform is a shared research environment of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Schools of Arts of Erasmushogeschool Brussel (EhB).
The mission of the Arts Platform is twofold:
- it creates the environment in which doctorates in the arts of excellent quality are delivered, which can serve as a reference for the artistic sector, for higher art education and for the university.
- initiating, discussing, developing joint initiatives around artistic research.
In artistic research, artistic practice is central. It is both an essential component and the finality of the research process. Artistic excellence is therefore a basic condition for a successful research track.
The artist/researcher exposes the complex structure of her/his/their artistic practice. She/he/they analyse(s) and interrogate(s) this practice in a critical and well-informed manner, in acting and thinking. She/he/they adopt(s) a similar critical stance towards the self-evidences that, as tradition as well as current consensus, prevail in the research field. The resulting insights are incorporated into artefacts and openly shared with peers in various, non-pre-imposed forms.
Artistic research is thus not only thoughtful artistic practice, it is also the attempt to open up the explicit and implicit knowledge development involved to the wider artistic and academic world.
